Matsubara High School – Cultural Festival – Open to the Public Day
The place: the parking lot of a convenience store a short distance from Matsubara High School (Matsuko or Matsubara High for boys).
Here, the eight members of the Matsubara Girls’ High volleyball team, plus Yuuki and Yuuta, making a total of ten, were supposed to meet up.
As you might have guessed from the fact that all eight of us from the volleyball club are here, despite grumbling when I first brought it up, everyone ended up joining.
...Honestly, they might be looking forward to this even more than I am.
By the way, all the girls are wearing our Matsubara Girls' High uniforms. We made a pact ahead of time because if someone went overboard, it would be a hassle. I also warned them not to do anything strange with makeup and told them they wouldn’t be allowed to join us if they did, so luckily there are no kabuki actors among us.
...Some are clearly brushing their hair more neatly than usual or used a pricey face mask the night before to make their skin look better, but that’s within acceptable bounds.
The only one missing is—
“Sorry, sorry. Kept you waiting, huh?”
With that voice, the last one to arrive, Yuuki, showed up.
“You’re late! Don’t make a girl wait!”
As a greeting, I kick Yuuki in the butt.
“Gah!! That hurt! Who the heck kicks people out of nowhere? I’m not treating someone like that as a girl!”
“You! What’s with that attitude when you’re the one late?!”
“I’m only a few minutes late!”
Despite the words, the atmosphere isn’t actually tense. This is just how Yuuki and I interact. Think of it as light physical banter.
“Y-Yuuri, that guy… he’s a college student, right?”
“Huh? No, he’s a rōnin. More specifically, unemployed.”
“But… he’s older, and a guy, right?”
“?? And so??”
“…Yuuri. I think you and that guy actually get along really well. Are you sure he’s not your boyfriend?”
““Even as a joke, no way!””
Yuuki and I replied in perfect sync.
“Listen, I get that high school girls like talking about romance and all, but even I have a right to choose.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?! What’s wrong with me?!”
“Pipe down! I’m saying I’m not interested in a kiddie meal like you!”
“You did NOT just say that!”
“If you want me to flirt with you, at least be on Hina-chan’s level—”
My high kick lands on Yuuki’s head (barely—he’s tall!). Unlike the earlier butt kick, this one had some real force behind it.
“You lay a finger on Hina and I’ll hit you so hard that won’t be the end of it!”
“Ow! Geez, you siscon. Take it easy, would you? Besides, Hina-chan’s like a little sister to me. I don’t see her that way. It was just a joke.”
“…This isn’t the usual Yuuri…”
“She’s like a totally different person…”
“I-I think that side of her is the real Yuuri, and the way she normally acts is kind of a personality we helped shape so she could survive in an all-girls’ school. Like putting on several layers of cat masks.”
That’s kind of rude, isn’t it? Am I really that different?
“Okay, okay, you two, let’s wrap this up. The underclassmen are waiting. Enough with the slapstick comedy, let’s go.”
In the end, it was Yuuta who pulled everything together. Mmmrgh…
Well, hypothetically, if Yuuki seriously fell for Hina and she wasn’t totally against it, I suppose that kind of relationship might work out. But last I heard, he started dating that Canal girl he met over the summer…
“Yuu-chan, why are you muttering to yourself? Come on, let’s go!”
Hina tugged at me to get moving. Honestly, she’s such a carefree little sister…
=====
“We’re running a booth at Class 3-2! We’ll give you a special deal, so stop by!”
“At 11 in the gym, we’re doing a cover of Odin! Be sure to come!”
As we received our tickets in front of the main gate of Matsubara High, two male students—apparently juniors from Yuuki and Yuuta’s old club—enthusiastically invited us over.
Well, they’re third years at a boys’ school, and probably haven’t had much contact with girls their age for over two years, so it’s understandable.
Like with our school’s festival, Matsubara High doesn’t let just anyone in freely. Anyone not currently enrolled needs a ticket, including alumni like Yuuki and Yuuta.
So they had reached out to their former clubmates in advance and asked them to prepare ten tickets, enough for all of us.
And when they came to deliver them, the reaction was… interesting.
The two of them, being sneaky, apparently only told their juniors something vague like “We’ve got a foreign friend who moved to Japan about a year ago and lives nearby—we want to show her what a Japanese high school festival is like.”
Given that explanation, it’s no wonder their juniors assumed it’d be a group of guys.
But then we showed up.
Just before meeting us, they had clearly been sulking, annoyed at having to run an errand for some bothersome seniors. But once they saw who we were, their attitudes changed completely. They instantly flipped into host mode, started praising Yuuki and Yuuta like heroes—it was a flawless turnaround. I used to be like that too, so I get it. Boys are simple creatures.
“So this is Matsubara High’s culture fest, huh? Hmmm. So far, I can’t really tell what’s different from our own.”
“You’re not gonna notice a difference just from walking through the front gate.”
“For now, let’s just go around in order. Everyone, follow us.”
“But don’t miss the gym at 11, okay? A school festival’s gotta have light music club bands and volunteer groups!”
“Oh, they have live shows here, huh?”
“What? Your girls’ school doesn’t?”
“There aren’t that many girls who start bands…”
And so, we began touring Matsubara High’s culture festival.
=====
As I've said many times before, the Matsubara Girls' High School volleyball team has a high average level of attractiveness.
So what happens when a group like that visits a boys' school like Matsutaka High, where the guys are probably starved for female interaction?
“You girls are so cute, here’s a little something extra!”
“This one’s on the house! Take it!”
Answer: They become the center of attention, like the “princess of the otaku club.”
No matter where we went, we were met with enthusiastic welcomes.
We were given things like popcorn in amounts that were clearly way more than a single serving.
Among us, the most popular was, unsurprisingly, Hina.
Well, obviously. I won’t say exactly what part, but... she's got volume! Her face is also right up there even among us, a group already known for high looks. And on top of that, her waist is perfectly slender. It might not be obvious since she’s wearing a skirt, but her hips are shapely, big, and soft. She’s got the kind of figure that’s crushed my spirit more times than I can count in the bath.
Hina-san... are you really sixteen?
The second most popular was, somewhat unexpectedly, Mirai.
Maybe it’s because she’s good at talking to people—while the other girls were shy around the Matsutaka guys, she had no problem chatting them up. She was already talking casually with Yuuki and Yuuta. And look, even now she’s exchanging contact info with someone!
Rather than a sweet smile, her expression was more of a confident smirk, but she was still smiling. And also—Mirai’s legs are really pretty.
Not like mine, which are just thin. Hers are healthy, nicely toned, and stretch out with a graceful feminine line that must be dazzling to the Matsutaka guys. Her skirt’s just above the knee. She knows exactly how to show off her charm…
Wait a sec—am I being a creep here?! What’s wrong with me!
…
And if my analysis is correct, the least popular one… is probably me.
N-no, it can't be helped!
I’m aware of it too. Sure, just going by looks, I don’t think I’m any worse than the others in the team, but the thing is...
It’s like this—if I had to compare, I’d be the uncooked version of something fried.
Even the best pork cutlet or a super fresh jumbo fried shrimp doesn’t really make your mouth water before it's cooked.
Just a bit more prep and it’ll be delicious—definitely. But if you’re hungry and craving something now, would you pick the ready-to-eat cutlet or the one that still needs cooking?
That’s what I mean—it’s not time to panic yet!
When I did that genetic test before, I was confirmed to be 100% a Tachibana. Which means I share genes with Ryou-nee, Mika-nee, and Hina—so my future is basically guaranteed to be successful...
“Yuu-chan, what’s up? You look like you’re deep in thought.”
“Just thinking about the future, that’s all.”
“???”
I’m not bold enough to ask them directly, but I’ll closely observe how Hina and Ryou-nee live their lives. If I imitate them, then surely…
After that, we continued checking out the different classrooms’ attractions, but most of them were the usual—food stalls, haunted houses, the same kind of stuff we had at our school. Just when I was getting bored, we found something different—a cardboard maze!
Ah. Hina and the other volleyball girls all had kind of hesitant expressions.
But I love this kind of thing. Seriously. Whoever made this really gets the heart of a boy. Boys always love stuff like secret bases.
See? Even Yuuki and the others, who didn’t look too into the haunted house, are all fired up about this!
—
“Eh? Yuu-chan, you want to try this?”
“I do.”
“Looks like you have to crawl around on all fours though…”
“I wear my skirt longer than the others to begin with, and I’ve got shorts underneath, so I’m good!”
—
“Ah, hey. You’re one of the staff here, right? Sorry to trouble you, but my friend here wants to try the maze.
So I know it’s crowded, but could you hold the line until she comes out? Just until she’s done, please?”
Next to me, Yuuki was negotiating something with one of the male students running the attraction.
I didn’t ask for this…
Also, aren’t you next in line, Yuuki? You’re into big-chested girls, and even if you accidentally see something, it’s just going to be my shorts. It’s not like anything’s going to happen...
“This isn’t working. We’re getting in the way of the festival.”
Yuuta suddenly said that. I wondered what he meant, but it wasn’t strange.
Eight girls from an all-girls school suddenly show up at a boys’ school. And every single one of them is cute.
Of course it draws attention. A lot of it. Ever since we got here, people have been following our movements. While our path is clear thanks to the crowd parting like Moses and the Red Sea, it’s been really noisy behind us.
“Well, yeah. Eight high school girls will do that.”
“What should we do?”
“Let’s split into two groups. That way the crowd behind us should split up too.”
“How should we divide?”
“First, Yuuta and I—since we’re the guides—should go separate ways. And since the Tachibana siblings know each other, the rest of the girls might find it easier to talk if we split them up as well.”
“Makes sense. Alright, let’s do rock-paper-scissors to decide—”
“Hold it! I get that we need to split, but if I’m not with Yuu-chan and she starts going wild, who’s going to stop her? Honestly, Yuuki-nii is likely to just go along with it, so at least let her stay with Yuuta-nii!”
“She says she doesn’t trust you, Yuuki.”
“You’re the one she trusts the least, Yuuji.”
—
After a bit of light back-and-forth, we ended up splitting into two groups to continue exploring the festival.
